I know, that’s a bold statement. But it truly was. Which is why it’s taken me a few days to get back to you all. I’m not quite the spry 20 yr old I used to be, and apparently I don’t bounce back from the college life as easily as I once did.
Oh college! It’s amazing how little has changed in 5 years, it was a fantastic weekend. Caught up with old friends, made some new ones, spent maybe $10 at the bar (I love upstate NY.) Love. Love. Love it. That photo above barely does campus any justice, I should have taken more pictures, because it is one of the most beautiful & serene places I have ever been.
When I applied to colleges as a wee high schooler my Mom & I took what was at the time an insane road trip to upstate NY. Where? Geneva? My Mom & I had traveled- trips to Disney, the long chorale tour of Italy & France, camping trips to New Hampshire, but we had never taken such a long road trip and never to a place quite like Upstate/Central New York- you know, the 315. We drove out to Ithaca originally, got lost, in the rain, I had a bad vibe about Ithaca, I refused to even go on the tour. So we got back in the car, and drove 40 minutes north and a smidge to the west to get to Geneva. We drove up South Main, parked at Admissions and they sent us to sit on the porch while we waited for the next tour. While sitting in adirondack chairs overlooking the lake, much like the view in the photo above, I looked at my Mom and said, well, this is nice. That was it. That was all it took. (ok, yes, it was a good fit academically and all that important stuff) Honestly though, it was just a good feeling and it’s the best choice I’ve ever made. I made friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life, and a connection to a place that I care deeply about. (Time to get out the tissues…)
I’ve had my share of great times post-college, and life in Boston has been such an adventure, but my true love is still Geneva. (Maybe more mistress because I don’t want to move there permanently, but you get the idea.) Ask most people and they’ll tell you the same thing, HWS is amazing and you should go. Send your kids, go visit, you’ll love it I promise.*
I guess this post goes in the newly made, “Just for Fun’ bin because nothing too exciting happened food-wise. There was a keg at somepoint, and I should mention, there was Wegman’s.
If you are from NY, NJ, Maryland, and some parts of PA and VA, you know what I’m talking about. The best grocery store ever. You’ll get it once you go to one. And for me, I’m sorry, but, this price for bananas? Oh my lil’ paycheck just got so jealous.
There are rumors that this phenonmenon is coming to Massachusetts, but I doubt it. There are already too many big family grocery chains, and who wants a star from NY? This is one time where I’ll give the win to New York. Unless we’re talking about Market Basket, but, I won’t put that on the record until the Basket opens its own sub-shop and has a self-serve candy/nuts/trail mix bar.
*If you don’t, let me know and I’ll send you a batch of “What are you thinking??! -Cookies.”
