Since I’ve been back I’ve been pretty busy getting things in order. Catching up with friends, cleaning up La Cucina in anticipation of a new roomie, and haven’t had as much time for cooking as I had hoped. I’ve gotten bit off track with The Challenge.
I tried last night to recreate Chicken Tikka Masala. Tried, being the key word there. I think it was a combination of inexperience and a sub-par recipe that led me astray. I won’t even bother to post the recipe or the photos, it’s just not worth it.
Instead I’ll catch you up on some good eats outside of La Cucina. Last Monday I had my new cable/internet installed, now we all know how good I am with that stuff and add the dinosaur of a laptop that I have into the equation, whew. I called in reinforcements. My buddy Nate came over and we had dinner at my neighborhood favorite- The Paramount. Nate had the steak tacos, and I went for the black bean burger. It was amazing. Sometimes veggie burgers can be dry and bland but this one was neither. I have yet to have a bad meal there- breakfast, lunch or dinner. (ok, the pancakes aren’t great, but that’s my only complaint)
Then on Wednesday, I had a first-round interview for the open position at La Cucina. I went to The Marliave which I walk by everyday, and which I’ve heard great things about. I don’t know if it was just an off night, or because it was restaurant week, but it’s just wasn’t all that good. (The restaurant, not the interview, that part went well.) The service was non-existent, and the food was just ok. The place itself was really nice, big windows out onto the street and a great atmosphere. It was really loud at first, but once the tables around us cleared out it was a bit better. I would go back, but so far I’m not impressed.
Finally, today I caught up with my friend S over brunch. I’ve been wanting to try this new brunch spot- The Friendly Toast, over in Cambridge and it did not disappoint. The decor is a little wacky, borderline creepy, but it’s fun and the food is really good. I had an omelette, it was nice & fluffy, good balance of filling to eggs. The homemade whole wheat toast was soft & thick, the homefries were good, the coffee was good, just an all around solid brunch.
Tonight, I will attempt to cook a good meal. I’m just off lately. Maybe I’ve been trying to hard to branch out, I should stick with what I know.
